Recently, we traveled west to experience the City of Marfa, Texas. Of course, I was excited to see the topography and art. But I was surprised by the effects of light on the scenery and architecture, of the clouds and bright blue sky, and the community of people which inhabit this unique town. The trip was an experience.
After lunch at the Pizza Foundation (yes, you should eat there), we visited the Ballroom and saw Sound Speed Maker which was the perfect intro to the trip.
We stayed at the El Paisano Hotel, a charming, historic hotel in the center of town. It has a great courtyard. This is the same hotel where Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, and Dennis Hopper stayed for two weeks while filming the movie GIANT.
Saturday mornings at 10:00 there is a small market in the pavilion. A Bulgarian lady makes the most delicious pastries. Her presentation is lovely and her sweet husband collects the money. Many locals eagerly await her arrival and the tasty pastries are quickly purchased.
The food is amazing! Friday night we ate at Maiya's and Saturday night we ate at Cochineal, which was my favorite. But truly both are excellent.
The town is full of surprises. Maybe because of my graphic design background, but I was especially inspired by the different forms of typography.
And of course... I was in cactus heaven. I took a ton of pictures and now look forward to sketching and painting.
